More than 100 family, friends and culinary enthusiasts gathered at Mildred’s Temple Kitchen on February 5th to cheer on their favourite Winterlicous 2014 Tin Chef competitor. As the festivities began, our five competitors: Meghan, Ronn, Deborah, Gav, and Jill were introduced to a cheering crowd, the celebrity chef Judges took the stage and the secret ingredient was revealed. The audience let out a gasp when the breast of Muscovy duck was presented and our competitors went straight to work. Charging the ingredient table with boundless enthusiasm, they began mapping out the unique flavour profiles of their dishes and for the following 60 minutes chopped, sliced, stirred, and sautéed their way to a hopeful win.
As the crowd counted down to the final 20 seconds, the room was electric with the competition. The judges took to tasting each dish with care and analyzing presentations. Meanwhile, two lucky audience members were chosen to sit ringside to the kitchen where they were treated to each of the competitors’ dishes. Each one of the five competitors outdid themselves that evening. Jill took to making homemade flatbread for her own version of a duck taco, Meghan pulled out her metal rings and meticulously plated grilled zucchini with arugula and poached pear. Deborah’s cheering section never let up and her aunties gave gentle suggestions as she blistered cherry tomatoes and thinly sliced her perfectly roast breast of duck. Gav worked with steady determination, whipping up salted potatoes and saucing his duck while Ronn wowed the judges with an amuse as he hunkered down at the stove to prepare his Cunard a la spatzel.
The judges tallied their scorecards and after much deliberation a winner emerged. Each of the five competitors outdid themselves. The judges defended their descision based on one simple thing: salt. The winner is….Gav Martell.
It takes a full brigade to pull off an event of this scale. Mildred’s Temple Kitchen would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our generous sponsors: The City of Toronto, Interac, Eska Water, Cattail Creek Estate Winery, Kensington Brewing Company, Faster Linen and the Manda Group.
We would also like to thank our entire team at the Temple, Kitchen Coaches Chef Michael Leary and Blythe Ogston for their patience and guidance, Rachel and Elissa for planning and promoting, a great management team who executed the millions of little details, our dedicated team of servers and bartenders, and most of all to our five Tin Chef Competitors who made the evening such a big success!
A word form Donna:
“The Tin Chef competitors enriched my culinary circle. I have 5 new friends that I’ve spent time in the kitchen with – the thing I love the most about cooking.”
